    Space--Time Tradeoffs for Subset Sum: An Improved Worst Case Algorithm

    The technique of Schroeppel and Shamir (SICOMP, 1981) has long been the most efficient way to trade space against time for the SUBSET SUM problem. In the random-instance setting, however, improved tradeoffs exist. In particular, the recently discovered dissection method of Dinur et al. (CRYPTO 2012) yields a significantly improved space--time tradeoff curve for instances with strong randomness properties. Our main result is that these strong randomness assumptions can be removed, obtaining the same space--time tradeoffs in the worst case. We also show that for small space usage the dissection algorithm can be almost fully parallelized. Our strategy for dealing with arbitrary instances is to instead inject the randomness into the dissection process itself by working over a carefully selected but random composite modulus, and to introduce explicit space--time controls into the algorithm by means of a "bailout mechanism"

    Non-Full Sbox Linearization: Applications to Collision Attacks on Round-Reduced Keccak

    The Keccak hash function is the winner of the SHA-3 competition and became the SHA-3 standard of NIST in 2015. In this paper, we focus on practical collision attacks against round-reduced Keccak hash function, and two main results are achieved: the first practical collision attacks against 5-round Keccak-224 and an instance of 6-round Keccak collision challenge. Both improve the number of practically attacked rounds by one. These results are obtained by carefully studying the algebraic properties of the nonlinear layer in the underlying permutation of Keccak and applying linearization to it. In particular, techniques for partially linearizing the output bits of the nonlinear layer are proposed, utilizing which attack complexities are reduced significantly from the previous best results

    In this paper, we give the first pre-image attack against 1- round KECCAK-512 hash function, which works for all variants of 1- round KECCAK. The attack gives a preimage of length less than 1024 bits by solving a system of 384 linear equations. We also give a collision attack against 1-round KECCAK using similar analysis

    Linear Structures: Applications to Cryptanalysis of Round-Reduced Keccak

    In this paper, we analyze the security of round-reduced versions of the Keccak hash function family. Based on the work pioneered by Aumasson and Meier, and Dinur et al., we formalize and develop a technique named linear structure, which allows linearization of the underlying permutation of Keccak for up to 3 rounds with large number of variable spaces. As a direct application, it extends the best zero-sum distinguishers by 2 rounds without increasing the complexities. We also apply linear structures to preimage attacks against Keccak. By carefully studying the properties of the underlying Sbox, we show bilinear structures and find ways to convert the information on the output bits to linear functions on input bits. These findings, combined with linear structures, lead us to preimage attacks against up to 4-round Keccak with reduced complexities. An interesting feature of such preimage attacks is low complexities for small variants. As extreme examples, we can now find preimages of 3-round SHAKE128 with complexity 1, as well as the first practical solutions to two 3-round instances of Keccak challenge. Both zero-sum distinguishers and preimage attacks are verified by implementations. It is noted that the attacks here are still far from threatening the security of the full 24-round Keccak

    High rate locally-correctable and locally-testable codes with sub-polynomial query complexity

    In this work, we construct the first locally-correctable codes (LCCs), and locally-testable codes (LTCs) with constant rate, constant relative distance, and sub-polynomial query complexity. Specifically, we show that there exist binary LCCs and LTCs with block length nn, constant rate (which can even be taken arbitrarily close to 1), constant relative distance, and query complexity exp(O~(logn))\exp(\tilde{O}(\sqrt{\log n})). Previously such codes were known to exist only with Ω(nβ)\Omega(n^{\beta}) query complexity (for constant β>0\beta > 0), and there were several, quite different, constructions known. Our codes are based on a general distance-amplification method of Alon and Luby~\cite{AL96_codes}. We show that this method interacts well with local correctors and testers, and obtain our main results by applying it to suitably constructed LCCs and LTCs in the non-standard regime of \emph{sub-constant relative distance}. Along the way, we also construct LCCs and LTCs over large alphabets, with the same query complexity exp(O~(logn))\exp(\tilde{O}(\sqrt{\log n})), which additionally have the property of approaching the Singleton bound: they have almost the best-possible relationship between their rate and distance. This has the surprising consequence that asking for a large alphabet error-correcting code to further be an LCC or LTC with exp(O~(logn))\exp(\tilde{O}(\sqrt{\log n})) query complexity does not require any sacrifice in terms of rate and distance! Such a result was previously not known for any o(n)o(n) query complexity. Our results on LCCs also immediately give locally-decodable codes (LDCs) with the same parameters

    Random Unitaries Give Quantum Expanders

    We show that randomly choosing the matrices in a completely positive map from the unitary group gives a quantum expander. We consider Hermitian and non-Hermitian cases, and we provide asymptotically tight bounds in the Hermitian case on the typical value of the second largest eigenvalue. The key idea is the use of Schwinger-Dyson equations from lattice gauge theory to efficiently compute averages over the unitary group.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur

    Preimage Attacks on Reduced Troika with Divide-and-Conquer Methods

    Troika is a recently proposed sponge-based hash function for IOTA\u27s ternary architecture and platform, which is developed by CYBERCRYPT. In this paper, we introduce the preimage attack on 2 and 3 rounds of Troika with a divide-and-conquer approach. Instead of directly matching a given hash value, we propose equivalent conditions to determine whether a message is the preimage before computing the complete hash value. As a result, for the two-round hash value that can be generated with one block, we can search the preimage only in a valid space and efficiently enumerate the messages which can satisfy most of the equivalent conditions with a guess-and-determine technique. For the three-round preimage attack, an MILP-based method is applied to separate the one-block message space into two parts in order to obtain the best advantage over brute force. Our experiments show that the time complexity of the preimage attack on 2 (out of 24) rounds of Troika can be improved to 3793^{79}, which is 31643^{164} times faster than the brute force. For the preimage attack on 3 (out of 24) rounds of Troika, we can obtain an advantage of 325.73^{25.7} over brute force. In addition, how to construct the second preimage for two-round Troika in seconds is presented as well. Our attacks do not threaten the security of Troika

    Approximately coloring graphs without long induced paths

    It is an open problem whether the 3-coloring problem can be solved in polynomial time in the class of graphs that do not contain an induced path on tt vertices, for fixed tt. We propose an algorithm that, given a 3-colorable graph without an induced path on tt vertices, computes a coloring with max{5,2t122}\max\{5,2\lceil{\frac{t-1}{2}}\rceil-2\} many colors. If the input graph is triangle-free, we only need max{4,t12+1}\max\{4,\lceil{\frac{t-1}{2}}\rceil+1\} many colors. The running time of our algorithm is O((3t2+t2)m+n)O((3^{t-2}+t^2)m+n) if the input graph has nn vertices and mm edges

    A PCP Characterization of AM

    We introduce a 2-round stochastic constraint-satisfaction problem, and show that its approximation version is complete for (the promise version of) the complexity class AM. This gives a `PCP characterization' of AM analogous to the PCP Theorem for NP. Similar characterizations have been given for higher levels of the Polynomial Hierarchy, and for PSPACE; however, we suggest that the result for AM might be of particular significance for attempts to derandomize this class. To test this notion, we pose some `Randomized Optimization Hypotheses' related to our stochastic CSPs that (in light of our result) would imply collapse results for AM. Unfortunately, the hypotheses appear over-strong, and we present evidence against them. In the process we show that, if some language in NP is hard-on-average against circuits of size 2^{Omega(n)}, then there exist hard-on-average optimization problems of a particularly elegant form. All our proofs use a powerful form of PCPs known as Probabilistically Checkable Proofs of Proximity, and demonstrate their versatility. We also use known results on randomness-efficient soundness- and hardness-amplification. In particular, we make essential use of the Impagliazzo-Wigderson generator; our analysis relies on a recent Chernoff-type theorem for expander walks.Comment: 18 page

    New Complexity Results and Algorithms for the Minimum Tollbooth Problem

    The inefficiency of the Wardrop equilibrium of nonatomic routing games can be eliminated by placing tolls on the edges of a network so that the socially optimal flow is induced as an equilibrium flow. A solution where the minimum number of edges are tolled may be preferable over others due to its ease of implementation in real networks. In this paper we consider the minimum tollbooth (MINTB) problem, which seeks social optimum inducing tolls with minimum support. We prove for single commodity networks with linear latencies that the problem is NP-hard to approximate within a factor of 1.13771.1377 through a reduction from the minimum vertex cover problem. Insights from network design motivate us to formulate a new variation of the problem where, in addition to placing tolls, it is allowed to remove unused edges by the social optimum. We prove that this new problem remains NP-hard even for single commodity networks with linear latencies, using a reduction from the partition problem. On the positive side, we give the first exact polynomial solution to the MINTB problem in an important class of graphs---series-parallel graphs.
